UTW review of The White Ribbon

Go here if you want to read my review this week in Urban Tulsa. It's of Michael Haneke's latest film The White Ribbon. I really liked it and am quite fond of the review as well.

An even greater surprise at the Oscars was the fact that it didn't win Best Cinematography. It had some competition in the Foreign Language Film category, but was far and away the most gorgeous film nominated for Cinematography.

I could not agree more on the importance of the black and white. What struck me was that there were a good few scenes completely bathed in sunlight (not just dark scenes), like the wheat fields in the summer, but that made everything only more nightmarish, quite literally like a bleached fabric, with the joy sapped out of it.

Rumblefish--It should have won for that too but I figured it would be passed over by people who hadn't seen it, whereas I thought it had a better chance w/ the foreign category.

Eva--the harvest scenes of wheat were pretty amazing. my first ever CineRobot post in 2005 was on how I love the use of wheat onscreen and it's used well in WR.

Well, it won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography. Usually, this award goes to the right person, even if that film is not picking up any other awards. This is not always the case, but the ASC Award, plus all of the international awards you mentioned made me think it had it in the bag.
